With lush tropical jungle, extraordinary volcanic landscapes, black sand beaches, historical ruins and a broad array of beautiful and interesting flora and fauna, our eco tourism is limited only by the imagination.
Exploring - Whether you choose our air conditioned rental jeep or your own hiking boots, the Island offers unlimited opportunities for exploration. Friendly communities welcome your interest in the culture of their Island. Montserrat is very safe and Islanders are always ready to offer helpful local advice and assistance. Whether exploring our unique mountain roads, unspoiled nature trails or stopping to buy fish from a local fisherman, you will always be made welcome.
Beaches - Montserrat has nine beaches, all with unique features. Black sand, white sand, old cannons, interesting caves and arches or natural hot springs, every beach offers it's own adventure. Pack a lunch and hike to - or hire a boat to - the pristine, secluded white sand beach at Rendezvous Bay where the snorkeling will delight you.
Dining and Bar Hoping - A variety of dining options are available. In Montserrat, the drinking water is pure and the food is always properly prepared. Whether you are fine-dining at one of our small hotels or enjoying a delicious roti from a roadside shop, the experience will be a satisfying one. The Friday-night 'rum run' is an event not to be missed! A small bus will take you on an accompanied tour of Montserrat rum shops, (local bars). Try your hand at a Monserration- style game of dominos, sample a variety of local food and drinks including our Island-made bush rum, ( not for the faint of heart!) and simply enjoy the cultural diversity that makes Montserrat such an interesting and special place.
Photography - Flowers, rare birds, iguanas, local architecture, gorgeous sunsets, churchyards, lush tropical mountain scenery, the volcano - all are wonderful subjects for expanding your photographic skills. Tours can be arranged with a professional photographer who will show you the best venues and supply helpful hints to help you create stunning photographs. Or you and your camera can explore this beautiful Island backdrop on your own.
Volcano Tours - Although many Caribbean islands are volcanic in origin, only Montserrat has a volcano which has been in a state of eruption since July, 1995. From safe vantage
points, you can often see rock falls and pyroclastic flows - rolling clouds of hot ash and rocks - cascading down the flanks of the volcano. Look down on the buried City of Plymouth and experience the devastation of ash damage in areas on the flanks of the volcano. A few simple directions and you can set off on your own. Alternatively, a guide can be made available to give you a complete tour and history of the volcano. The Montserrat Volcano Observatory also welcomes visitors. www.mvo.ms
Hiking and Mountain Biking - From a quiet morning stroll to an extreme mountain workout,
the opportunities are endless. Rental bikes are available and except for the areas restricted by the volcano, you are safe anywhere in Montserrat. Pack a lunch and hike or bike up into one of Montserrat's farming areas where you will see silk cotton trees, banana plantations and if you're lucky, the native Montserrat Oriole and Agouti. Guided hikes with the Montserrat National Trust can easily be arranged.
Other Island Activities - include a wide variety of local cultural, sporting and fishing events, beach fetes & BBQ's. Our carnival is in December and is a month long exhibition of the Island's diverse and talented culture. St Patrick's Day is also celebrated with enthusiasm on the Island and is a day of merriment not to be missed. You can enjoy lighted tennis courts located at the Montserrat secondary school, kayaking, boating and a variety of other local activities.
Diving and Snorkeling - Scuba divers in Montserrat can find a full-service dive shop and watersport rental facility on the Southern shore of Little Bay. The Green Monkey Dive Shop offers scuba packages including multiple day packages, discover scuba, and PADI training courses. The shop also offers guided snorkeling tours to nearby Rendevous Bay and other local sites as well as sunset cruises and island tours. Divers or other water enthusiasts may purchase or rent diving and snorkeling gear at the shop. In addition, items such as inflatable dive kayaks, sea scooters, and snorkeling rafts are available for hourly or daily rental.
Following a morning or afternoon of diving or snorkeling, guests can enjoy a refreshing drink at the Dive Shop's bar facility, The Monkey Bar. The new beach deck provides a perfect location for sipping a cool drink while watching the surf and sunset. The Green Monkey Dive Shop is located in Little Bay at the site formerly known as the Log On Bar. For more information, visit the website at www.divemontserrat.com.
